Joan M. (Retka) Nelson
Funeral services will be 1PM Thursday March 16, 2006 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, for Joan (Retka) Nelson, who died Sunday at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, Albany. Fr. Scott Wittkop will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8PM Wednesday and after 8AM Thursday at the Stein-Dingmann Funeral Home in Long Prairie. The Catholic Women will pray the rosary at 3 PM, and Parish Prayers at 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Stein-Dingmann Chapel.
Joan was born March 17, 1925 in Morrison County, Minn., to Leo and Sophia (Rasinski) Retka.
She grew up in Todd/Morrison County on the family farm. She joined the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, and earned her registered nursing degree from St. Francis Hospital. She served hospitals at Parkers Prairie, Alexandria, Duluth, Breckenridge, and Moorhead. After 25 years, with the Pope’s permission, she left the Franciscan Order. She then worked at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, in the Heart Center from 1968 until her retirement in 1995. She married Wayne Nelson on July 7, 1973 at St. Olaf’s Catholic Church, Minneapolis.
She enjoyed music, and spent many of her retirement years doing volunteer work at Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Louis Park, where she was active in all parts of Parish Ministry. She was also a member of the Order of Carmelites.
She is survived by her sister and 3 brothers: Sr. Evelyn Retka, FSPA, LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Alvin (Margaret) Retka, Brandon, MN; Edwin (Mary Ann) Retka, Browerville, MN; Richard (Barbara) Retka, St. Cloud, MN., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Alfred.
Pallbearers will be Tim, Ken, Robert, James, and John Retka, and Joe Schramel.
